Will Obesity Destroy A Nation, Is History Being Repeated
"The fate of a Nation and it's people depends on how it is fed" This historic remark was made more than a century ago - shortly after the battle of Waterloo- by the meditative Frenchman Brillat Savarin.
He had seen the once powerful French empire slowly slip away from the over weight obese Napoleon. Years before Napoleon had been the handsome hero of his people, full of sex appeal and with an athletic body the envy of men and the desire of women. But over the years he had become a huge jowly over weight man. He was no longer held in any esteem , he lost his authority and eventually literally ate himself out of power.
Despite the fact Napoleon ultimately stood down from power he saw in the end it was a result of his excessive and obsesive eating. Such that Napoleon wrote a now famous paper called Obesity in which he attempted to teach his fellow men and women about the serious consequences of obesity and how it was capable of destroying lives . It had his, and to this day it continues to do so across America and beyond.
Napoleon tried like his predessors and those that followed after him to inform people that the best way to eat was just enough to maintain a healthy body. But his attempts like those that have followed him and continue to do so today fall too often on deaf ears as the increasingly alarming levels of obesity worldwide demonstrate.
People on the whole don't really want to be fat, in fact I doubt any one actually wants to be fat do they?
Who would choose to be fat? Am I right that fat kids are the ones who get teased at school and how many fat pop stars or movie stars are there ... Have you noticed when fat people get roles on TV they are nearly always so people can make fun of them.
So why is it when we sit down at a table and eat roasted, boiled, stewed and baked food in fact foods prepared in any number of ways to make ourselves fat? Truth is we love food and we love eating but surely we need to eat to survive I hear you cry.
But do you know something the worse part is the food we love eating most is the food which provides us the least benefit and causes us the most harm.How many people say but I only have the odd burger now and again, or I only eat the odd plate of fries or a pizza when I get home late.
It's some sort of strange world we live in when we condem those who choose to smoke. We condem that they put a strain on our health resources and are totally selfish caring only about their own welfare. We even pass laws to prevent these people doing themselves too much harm. But when food becomes involved we just shrug and ignore the problem.
Haven't we all seen those people walking and shoving food in their mouths so desperate to eat it's like they would die if they waited to get home.
But the reality is it almost certainly it does but not in the way they are thinking as they devour their food.
I expect you find my rather blunt and perhaps overly honest views on obesity a bit extreme but are they really? Isn't it pretty easy to understand obesity when I put it like that?
Has all that pussy footing around really got the message over to you? I guess not or you wouldn't still be worried about being over weight in the first place. Does any of that mushy stuff really make you want to take action. I doubt it. Lets face it very few babies are born that way infact you probably looked like any other baby. But isn't it kinda funny how over the years your weight has just crept up on you while you wern't even looking.
But food is just one small part of the equation yes it's important but not everything which is why so many diet programs have failed before they start. It's how you want to think , how you think you look, what makes you feel good and bad and why, it how you eat, what you cook and even the way you dress all of these factors and many more all matter.
There so much more to looking good and controlling your body and self image than just eating a bowl of museli for breakfast or taking some magic pill to stop you feeling hungry.It's much more than all that it's about your inner and outer beauty , it's about your romance , it's about sex , it's about your health and ultimately it's about you.
